When Porsche first came out with the Boxster and then the Cayman, these were meant to be cars for people who couldn't afford a 911. Now with the huge success of both cars, it seems more people are going for the cheaper Boxster and Cayman rather than the 911.
With the introduction of the GTS versions of both the Cayman and the Boxster, it's pretty easy to see why. Powered by smaller versions of Porsche's flat six engine, the Boxster can give drivers the sports car feeling without the sports car price. The Cayman can even go around a corner faster than the more powerful 911. That's probably due to the fact that the flat six is located in the middle of the Cayman rather than at the back like the 911. Now, the flat six engine in the GTS versions come very close to the same power as the 911 with 340 horsepower.
So now, it looks like Porsche will be reducing the engine size in both the Cayman and Boxster to just four cylinders. Last time Porsche used a four cylinder engine was in the 80's and 90's with the 944. It wasn't the fastest Porsche on the road, but it did make for some fun on the back roads for a cheap price.
This new flat four will have much more power than the current flat six. It's rumored that the engine could have as much as 395 horsepower. That's way more than a 911 has. Chances are the new 911 will feature even more power than that. Maybe close 400 or even 500 horsepower. Who knows. Either way, there will now be a much bigger gap for the three cars, but at least they'll still have their sporty feel for a cheaper price.
