In the Porsche family, there are three main siblings. There's the 911, which is the oldest sibling and most well liked. There's the Boxster, which is the youngest sibling, always looking to be like the 911. Then there's the Cayman, the middle child that no one ever pays attention to.
It does have the pretty looks like the 911, but on a straight road, the 911 is much faster. With a 2.7L flat six, the Cayman will go from 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds while the 911 gets there in 4.2 seconds. The Cayman also only goes to a top of 165 mph while the 911 goes to 178 mph.
There is one thing that the new Cayman can do that the 911 can't. It can outrun the 911 in the corners. No matter how hard you turn or how fast you go, the Cayman is the king of corners. Even on a wet day when the roads are incredibly slippery, the Cayman holds onto the roads even at 60 mph. Any other car would be flopping around and maybe even starting to spin out, but the Cayman is still very controlled and holds it's grip on the wet roads.
The base Cayman is not that pricey either. With the base Cayman starting at under $54,000 and the S-Model at under $65,000, this is a huge bargain for something that can corner better than a 911. So it looks like the Cayman is no longer the child being unnoticed by anyone anymore. It can now do something it's older brother can't, go around corners at a blistering speed. So if you're looking for something that will be great to travel in on a weekend in the country side with your hot date, the Cayman is the one. Even deep in the mountains on some very twisty roads, the Cayman will feel like the best car for the job.
Special thanks to Porsche of Nashua in Nashua, NH for test vehicle.
