The Renault Eolab: France's Answer to Volkswagen's XL1

The Renault Eolab: France's Answer to Volkswagen's XL1

When Volkswagen revealed its XL1 concept car, everyone knew that the future of the automobile was here. It looked like it came from the future and got an unbelievable 260 mpg. Now, Renault as come up with their own super fuel efficient car that gets the same mpg as the German car.

It's simply called the Eolab, although it should be called Ecolab, but that does make it sound too politically correct. Unlike Volkswagens car, the Eolab looks like an actual car instead of a spacepod. It's powered with a gas and battery hybrid system. The battery can get about 37 miles of range while no word on what type of engine is used. It's most likely either a three or four cylinder engine.

The biggest thing about this car is how much it weighs. Using light materials like aluminum and magnesium, the car weighs only 880 pounds, making it pretty much a feather in the wind. Most of the time, high fuel efficient cars like these will save you money on gas, but aren't particularly fun or interesting to drive. You can probably use this car best in stop and go traffic or in the city, while the rest of the roads can be used for fun and exciting cars.

The Eolab will most likely just be a production car, but Renault has hinted that the technolgy in this car could go into future cars. The Eolab will be on display next month at the Paris Motor Show.
