There are many car companies out there that offer sports sedans. You get the power and handling of a sports car with the conveniences of a four door sedan. But some sports sedans are either too sporty or are not sporty enough. The Chevrolet SS is something that has got both sides spot on.
When you first glance at the SS, it looks like a typical four door sedan. It doesn't even look like it could outrun anything. When you step inside, you do get sporty bucket seats as well as a spacious and luxurious interior. The combination of black leather with red stitching and the touch of suede do give the inside a nice sporty and luxury feel. If it toned down on the chrome, the inside would be even better.
Being a Chevy, you get plenty of cool gadgets, like the head-up display that shows you your speed. You even get lane departure warning that starts shouting at you if you swerve off you lane or if a car cuts you off. But the thing that makes this car really surprising is what lays underneath the hood. With the 6.2L V8 from the Corvette Stingray giving the car 415-hp, you get a surprising 0-60 mph time of just 4.4 seconds. You also get Brembo brakes, so this cars stops just as quick as it takes off. Being the V8 from the Corvette, it has a great sounding noise. But it's quiet enough that it doesn't cause your ears to bleed every time you put your foot down.
The one thing that does make or break a sports sedan is the suspension. If the suspension is too hard, it's going to make you exhausted every time you drive it. If it's too soft, it won't be able to handle all the power under the hood. Luckily, the SS has the suspension right in the middle. It's hard enough that it can handle being thrown into a corner at really fast speeds, but soft enough that it's quiet and comfortable when you have to go and run errands.
It seems that there is now a new contender in the field of sports sedans and it's not going down without a fight. After driving many different sports sedans out there, it's nice to see a four door car that feels more like a sports car but is able to go back to being a regular four door car when it wants to.
Special thanks to Colonial West Chevrolet of Fitchburg, MA for test vehicle.
