Youve probably noticed that gas prices just seem to be getting higher and higher. Even now, gas prices are almost at around $4.00 or more in some places, and its said that theyll just keep getting higher. So now, people are deciding to get rid of their regular gas guzzling vehicle and switch to a different type of car. Some people choose electric vehicles, while others, like me, decide to just keep their regular gas powered car. Other people are also going to cars that are both electric and gas powered, or hybrid cars. Now I am one who lies to help make the environment better. I do recycle and try to not waste natural resources. But, I will never waste my money on a hybrid car. The most popular hybrid car is the Toyota Prius. It is powered by both a 1.5 liter straight 4 engine and an electric motor. The electric motor not only gets the car going to 10 miles an hour, but it also starts the car, and charges the battery. Once the car starts going faster than 10mph, the 4 cylinder engine kicks in and can get to around 90 mph. Now the main reason people buy hybrids is because of the fuel economy, which is around 40 mpg. However, almost all modern cars, even sports cars, get 40 mpg and can go much faster than the Prius. Ive blown by a Prius in my AMC Pacer before the driver could figure out what just past him. Even though my car gets about half the mpg than the Prius, its way more fun to drive and goes much faster. Now hybrids still use gasoline, and the electric motor only works at 10 mph or when the car is not moving. So most of the time, the gas engine will be doing more of the work. Another problem is if a car is powered by just an electric motor. Not only do you have to charge it every day, it doesnt take long before the car needs to be charged again. It takes roughly about 3 hours to charge an electric car, so if you forget to plug it in, you have to wait 3 hours until the car is fully charged. All in all, hybrids are not the best cars to get. Electric cars are not even better. Theyre slow, you need to charge them, you cant go far without having to recharge them, but they do have great gas mileage. Instead of getting a hybrid, get a diesel powered car instead. They go just as fast as a regular gas powered car, and you dont have to fill them up as often. Diesel cars have about the same gas mileage as hybrids since you dont have to fill up as often. So unless gas prices become $10 a gallon, I dont see hybrids replacing the much more fun, and much faster gas powered cars.
