It was a thing of beauty, being able to travel around without the use of a horse. Yep, when the automobile was first invented, it changed the world forever. Now people were able to travel anywhere they wanted whenever they wanted to. Over the years, car makers started making their cars faster, edgier, and more fun to drive. Of course, the government had to come in and ruin the driving experience. Starting in the 1970s, ridiculous government safety and vehicle regulations mandated that car makers must oblige to a certain amount of safety and emission regulations. This overreaction to fuel economy and safety not only made cars much slower, it also made them heavier due to the abundance of safety and emission control equipment. This almost brought all car makers to bankruptcy, and even killed off the smaller car companies that including American Motors due to the ridiculous safety regulations that had to be met. Now I am one who does like driving in something thats safe, but there is a limit. Most cars today have catalytic converters, and for some reason, 8-10 airbags spread all around the car. Not only does this make the car heavier, but it doesnt even make a car safer. Being hit by an airbag is like being punched in the face. Now I wouldnt want to be punched in the face after I get into a crash. Even when you hope an airbag will deploy, it never does. So why put in something that causes more irritation than safety? Another safety feature is ABS brakes. This is apparently supposed to keep drivers from losing control of their car if they begin to slide on some ice. Now that sounds great, if it actually worked. It doesnt matter if a car has ABS brakes or not, once a car hits the ice, if the driver hits the brakes, theyre going to start spinning whether they have ABS or not. Of course, most people would prefer to have ABS brakes and too many airbags, but the real way to make a car safer is by improving the suspension. You take out the airbags and put in strong shock absorbers and coil springs; you get a much better ride without the heavy airbags and are now able to turn around a corner without spinning out of control, thus eliminating the need for airbags altogether. Would people actually listen and improve the suspension instead of adding dumb safety features that dont help? Apparently not, since most cars today still use prehistoric leaf springs as their suspension. I hope that someday the government will just leave the car makers alone and get back to fixing the economy and other stuff. The automakers probably wouldnt have needed bailing out in the first place if they didnt have to deal with the stupid regulations that take the fun and excitement out of driving. Well, well see if cars become more exciting or just continue to get even more boring to look at and even more boring to drive.
