This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang. It also marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most successful cars ever made. Mazda unveiled the MX-5 Miata back in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show. It was supposed to be something that felt like an old fashioned two seater roadster. Not only did it look like an old fashioned roaster, it actually drove like one too.
Like the Corvette and Firebird, the MX-5 has had many design changes over the years with a different version debuting every generation. But even though the look has changed, the feeling you get when you drive it hasn't. Sure, it may be a bit small and it doesn't take off like a jet fighter, but when you get it up to speed and go around some twisty roads, you'll have a giant smile on your face.
All MX-5's have been powered by little four cylinder engines, but they all had rear wheel drive, so you can drift it around corners if you want to have some real fun. To celebrate 25 years of great success, Mazda is debuting a new generation, more accurately, it's fifth generation. Mazda is being quite secretive about the new Miata, but it will have a new body, and there may be a hint of Alfa Romeo built in. There are hints that the new MX-5 may debut at the New York Auto Show on April 16. Until then, we'll have to just wait and see what surprises Mazda has for the new Miata.
