Porsche Celebrates 50 Years of the 911

Porsche Celebrates 50 Years of the 911

Some say it's just a Volkswagon Beetle on steroids, but others, including me, call it Porsche's best sports car ever. Not just because of the way it rides or handles, but because it has stood the test of time for 50 years and has not seen many changes.

Back in 1963, Porsche unveiled what was originally called the 901. This is what Porsche viewed as the future of sports cars. However, due to some controversy over the name, the 901 became the 911 and Porsche's icon was born.

Apart from a few style changes, the setup is pretty much the same. The body looks like a bathtub, and the engine is in the back. The engine supplied for the 911 has changed very little either, except for the amount of power it produces. It is and probably will always be a six cylinder boxer engine.

There was a time though when people thought the 911 would cease to exist. This was during the late 70's, a few years after political bastard Ralph Nader managed to brainwash people into thinking that rear engined cars are death traps. Due to people being frightened of the scary 911, a front engined car was created. It was called the 928, and was powered by a V8 engine located in the front. After a few more years went by, people finally came to their senses and went back to the 911.

Despite no big changes done to the 911 in 50 years, the engine did get switched from an air cooled engine to a water cooled engine. Also, the handling to the car did improve over the years. This not only made the car easier to drive, it made it faster around corners and much more fun to drive as well.

So while some will stay say it's just a Beetle and can't explain why it's still hear after not changing for 50 years, you can just bring them for a ride in it and after a few minutes of hard cornering, maybe then they'll know why it's Porsche's greatest sports car and why it's still here after 50 years of the same thing.
