The Arrival of Hybrid Supercars

The Arrival of Hybrid Supercars

Why are supercar makers insisting on building hybrids? First the god awful Toyota Prius came along, insisting that it saves gas. What it really does though is use gas to power the car and the electric motors charge the battery. So in essence, the electric motors just act as a starter and as an alternator.

Now all car makers are deciding to join the hybrid fad and create hybirds of their own. Even supercars are now coming out with hybrids. McLaren's new P1 and Porsche's 918 wll both be hybrids. Even Ferarri's new Enzo replacement will be a hybrid.

Sure, it does look fantastic. The doors open in a cool scissor like manner, and the car has Ferarri beauty all over. But underneath the pretty body lies an 800 hp V12 engine. That sounds fine, but then there is also a 163 hp electric motor. This now adds to a total of 903 hp. So this car will be a fast hybrid, but there's still the sense of knowing that this car is a hybrid. Then there's the name of the car, LaFerrari. Sounds more of a girly name than a supercar name.

Then there's the inside. From a glance, it looks breataking. Once you get a closer look, it has the same problem that all other Ferrari interiors have. All the switches including the lights, wipers, directionals, and road settings are all located on the steering wheel. So everytime you turn the steering wheel, the buttons and switches are in a different spot than where you remember and that gets a bit irritating. Then there's all the images on the dashboard. No matter what you decide to display, none of the displays make any sense.

The reason most people buy hybrids is to save money on gas. The reason most people buy supercars is still feel raw power and speed no matter how fuel efficient the car is. If you combine both hybrids and supercars, you get a bit of an oxymoron. It just doesn't feel right having a hybrid V12 engine. Tankfully, Lamborghini's new Veneno will be a traditional gas powered car. Even though it will have less ower than the LaFerrari, it will most likely be faster and more fun to drive due to no heavy electric motors and the feeling of driving an old fashioned gas powered car. There most likely will come a time when the only cars offered will be either hbrid or electric powered, but I'm still hanging on to the hope that behind all the girly hybrids and electric cars, there will still be a manly supercar powered by raw fuel and able to put a smile on your face.
