Ever since the car was invented, people were determined to go as fast as they possibly could. When they did that, they tried to go ever faster. Then, other people challenged those people to race to see whose car is faster. A few years after the Mount Washington Auto Road was built, a few drivers decided to see who can be the fastest to race to the top. In 1904, the first race up the Mount Washington Auto Road began. This is what started almost all road races in the years to follow. The first 500-mile race at the Brickyard didn't start until 7 years later. Even the popular Pikes Peak climb didn't start until 12 years after the first Mount Washington climb. Now, 110 years later, another race to the clouds took place last weekend.
Sure, most cars are mostly rally cars and modern cars that have been tuned up, but there were a few vintage cars that paid homage to the original Climb to the Clouds. The weather was a bit hot and humid, but there were very little clouds in the sky. There were a few breakdowns during the race, but no one was seriously injured. The only thing that was needed was a tow truck to tow some broken cars back down the mountain. There was a new record that was broken during the race. David Higgins and co-driver Craig Drew managed to drive to the top in an incredible 6 minutes and 9 seconds. Not bad for an off-road rally driver.
With only a little over 80 cars participating in the race, it's definitely not as popular as the Pikes Peak hill climb, which also took place last weekend in Colorado. But without the Climb to the Clouds, all the other races would probably not even exist today. It's been three years since the last race. Chances are the next race won't happen for another two to three years after that. We'll just have to see if there are any car company willing to sponsor the race to see who can be the fastest driver up one of the tallest mountains in the North East.
