Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept
Nissan is introducing a new fuel-cell hydrogen electric SUV concept at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.
The Nissan TeRRA SUV Concept is envisioned to be the only zero emission SUV as of now. Nissan created its own 3-motor 4x4 fuel-cell electric powertrain, using its proprietary hydrogen fuel-cell stack. Nissan flexed its technological muscle and created a compact fuel-cell unit that boasts world's best power density of 2.5kW/L.
The concept's design itself is nothing too surprising. The rugged exterior matched with nature-inspired interior is what many would expect from an SUV concept.
The TeRRA SUV Concept's technology, however, sends a clear signal that Nissan is ready to be a leader in fuel-cell electric SUV segment, just as it did with the LEAF in the sedan class.
Even though almost all auto makers can manufacture viable hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, the biggest challenge for the hydrogen fuel-cell technology continues to be distribution of hydrogen. Perhaps President Obama's second term should include a government mandate that all gas stations have a hydrogen filling pump by 2020. Then the US could truly become foreign oil independent.
