Mazda picked Moscow to be the world-debut ground for the all-new MAZDA6.

Based on the TAKERI concept, the 2014 MAZDA6 aims to be a world-class midsize sedan.

The specifications released at the Moscow International Motor Show are for the Russian market, but many of the features are expected to show up in the US when MAZDA6 hits the showrooms in early 2013.

MAZDA6 will be the second vehicle to employ Mazda's fuel efficient SKYACTIV technology. SKYACTIV engines use advanced engineering to increase horsepower output per displacement, resulting in more spirited performance with less fuel.

SKYACTIV does not stop only at the powertrain, but it is a more holistic approach to efficient mobility. SKYACTIV-Body and SKYACTIV-Chassis also contribute to increasing the vehicle's fuel economy.

The SKYACTIV-Body uses ultra-high tensile steel, resulting in simpler design and lighter weight, while increasing torsional rigidity by about 30 percent. The SKYACTIV-Chassis focuses more on the driving performance and handling, and has a finely tuned front strut and rear multi-link suspension system.

Along with the SKYACTIV-Body, Mazda engineers enhanced MAZDA6's aerodynamic airflow to a class-leading 0.26 coefficient of drag.

Mazda also put in a ground breaking capacitor-based regenerative braking system called "i-ELOOP", which is developed by Mazda. This world's-first braking system is tuned more for the real-world driving of frequent brake-and-go conditions, and it could improve MPG by about 10%.

The MAZDA6 will also have available the "i-stop" idling stop system, which offers a class-leading engine restart time of 0.35 seconds. The system turns off the engine when the car comes to a stoplight, and restarts when the driver steps on the accelerator. Faster restart time means smoother driving feel at the stop light.

Mazda also put in many of the advanced features that used to be available only on luxury vehicles.

The Smart City Brake Support uses a near-infrared beam sensor to detect possible frontal collision, and it warns the driver and automatically applies brakes to reduce the car's speed.

The Hill Launch Assist works as "temporal braking" while the drivers lifts the foot off the brake pedal to step on the accelerator at an incline.

The Emergency Stop Signal rapidly blinks the hazard lights to warn the vehicles behind when the driver applies strong brakes at highway driving speed.

The Rear Vehicle Monitoring alerts the driver in case of other vehicles in blind spots, on sides or behind.

The Lane Departure Warning System warns the driver of unintentional lane departure. The on-board computer analyzes the road marketing captured by a camera, and warns the driver if the car goes off lane without the lane change signal on.

The High-Beam Control automatically detects oncoming traffic and lowers the high-beam at night time.

In the highly competitive midsize car segment, Mazda has a work cut out for them. The new MAZDA6 has the elegant yet sporty look, and with all the features that are on par or above its competition, it may well be the first significant contender from Mazda in a very long time.

Fans can't wait until the US specifications are released.
