2014 Volkswagen Golf
Volkswagen released the new Golf to the public in Berlin. The seventh generation Golf will come to America in 2013 as the 2014 model year.
Volkswagen seemed to have succeeded in significantly improving its best seller.
The new Golf is 220 pounds lighter, thanks to the new architecture and attention to details in every component that went into the car. Volkswagen engineers even made sure that they used a lighter air conditioning unit, which now weighs 6 pounds less than the unit used in the previous generation Golf.
While the car is lighter, it is bigger than its predecessor. The body is 2.2 inches longer and 0.5 inches wider. The overall car is 0.8 inches lower, and the interior space is notably larger, especially on the shoulder space.
Because of the lighter weight and more efficient engine, the overall fuel economy is expected to increase. The specifications for the US version is not set yet, but the European version touts city-highway combined 49MPG for the 140HP turbocharged 1.4L engine, and 62MPG for the 105HP TDI Clean Diesel engine.
Volkswagen Golf has always been one of the favorites for the young buyers and the budget conscious, and just by the looks of it, the new generation Golf may also become one of the hottest sellers in the US.
