Iconic Test Drive: Mercedes Benz CLK 320

Iconic Test Drive: Mercedes Benz CLK 320

Made from 1996-2009, the Mercedes Benz CLK 320 became the basis for the current E Class. It does have a fantastic look, especially with two doors and a convertible top.
Inside however, things become a little disappointing. While most Mercedes have leather and wood trim everywhere, the interior of the CLK has hard plastic. A great interior that is completely ruined by cheap plastic. It does use old fashioned buttons instead of touchscreens, which is much more satisfying knowing that when you hit a button you know that its working.
Powered by a 3.2L V6, the CLK does take a little bit to get going. Getting from 0-60 mph takes around 7.1 seconds. It will then continue to a top speed of 150mph. Many people have tried to get the CLK to that top speed, but the tires on the CLK will only last to about 130 mph. So its probably a good idea to put some stronger tires on. Even though its only a V6 and a bit slow, the sound it makes is just incredible.
Despite the slow speed, the fun thing about this car is how it handles. You can do hard cornering at high speeds and keep it in control. If youre feeling brave, you can turn the traction control off. When you do that, you do get an exclamation mark of the dash pretty much saying, You turned the traction control off you crazy person! With the traction control off, you now can have much more fun. You can drift around corners and blow smoke like you wouldnt believe.
Of course, there are way more powerful Mercedes out there. Theres even more powerful versions of the CLK, like the CLK63 AMG and CLK DTM AMG. But the one thing thats great about the CLK 320 is that its a car that can be used both for fun and as an everyday car.
