Volvo introduced its "Cross Country" version of the compact wagon V40.

It has been 15 years since Volvo first introduced a "Cross Country" on the V70. In the 1990's, when SUVs were the hottest sellers, Volvo SUV-fied a wagon to create a successful crossover of the time. Volvo's "Cross Country" featured car-like ride, wagon-like utility and truck-like driving capability. Almost.

Fast forward to 2012 - as fuel efficiency has become one of the top priorities in the automotive world, it seems only appropriate to SUV-fy a compact wagon.

Even though making a utility vehicle out of a compact wagon may turn off most off-roaders, the all-new Volvo V40 Cross Country is more than capable.

The 2.5L T5 engine with turbocharged 5 cylinders outputs 254HP, and coupled with an advanced all-wheel-drive system that includes features such as descent control, the V40 Cross Country can be an all-weather and all-terrain vehicle. The 2.5L T5 is powerful enough to accelerate the V40 Cross Country from 0 to 60MPH in about 6 seconds.

The V40 Cross Country also comes in a 2.0L T5 version and an economy 1.6L T4 GTDi engine. A 2.0L 5-cylinder T4 engine may be available in some countries as well. All versions have start-stop and regenerative braking system for energy efficiency.

The most utilitarian aspect of the V40 Cross Country is in its interior flexibility. The seats can fold in variety of ways, and even the front passenger seat can be folded forward, providing a possible hauling space for longer items. The storage spaces are abundant and well thought-through.

Volvo will be manufacturing the V40 Cross Country in Ghent, Belgium, and expect to sell mainly in Europe and China.
