The Hyundai Tucson, also-known-as the ix35 in Europe, is going full speed ahead with the fuel cell technology.

On top of recently joining the US Department of Energy's H2USA project, Hyundai just delivered the first assembly line-produced fuel cell versions of the ix35 to the City of Copenhagen in Denmark. In February 2013, Hyundai started the production of the fuel cell vehicles at its Ulsan plant in South Korea, and it made the company the first global automaker to begin commercial rollout of zero-emissions vehicles.

Once considered behind in fuel cell technology, Hyundai now joins other major automakers in implementing the breakthrough zero-emission technology.

Fuel cell vehicles are electric vehicles. But instead of plugging the vehicle into an electric socket to recharge, the vehicle's on board fuel cells create electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen. The process of combining these gases creates electricity and water. The electricity is stored in the vehicle's battery for the electric motors, and the water vapor is emitted through the vehicle's tail pipe.

The current day fuel cell vehicle's technology requires hydrogen gas stations (instead of gasoline stations). Now with the backing of the US Department of Energy, more hydrogen gas pumps will become available in major metropolitan areas.

With breakthrough battery technologies around the corner, more fuel cell and electric vehicles are bound to become readily available in the next decade.
