This car is an update on the Exige V6 Cup. The R version is lighter, more powerful car with variable traction control, lightweight engine cover and lightweight battery.
One predecessor of the CupR is the Lotus Elan S2. We ran into a fantastic example of this seminal model at the 2012 Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue.
