It is official - GM will produce the Cadillac ELR at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant.

Based on the Converj concept that GM unveiled in 2009, the Cadillac ELR is an "extended range" electric vehicle. In other words, it is a hybrid that relies mostly on electricity.

ELR's four cylinder gasoline powered engine will work as a "generator" for the electric engine, when the battery's electricity level drops to low.

After about $35 million of additional investment, the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly will be ready to start ELR's production in late 2013.

Many skeptics doubted that GM would actually produce the ELR. While product details are not out yet, the ELR represents an exciting time for the Cadillac brand, as the company builds the most technologically advanced car in its history.
