Honda's unfortunate experiment with a hybrid of hatchback, wagon and SUV is coming to an end with the Acura ZDX.

Honda introduced the Acura ZDX in 2009, and 2013 will be the final model year for the vehicle.

Strangely enough, Honda decided to do a significant update with the ZDX on the year that it is being discontinued. The 2013 ZDX is getting a new grill design, new front and back bumpers, and numerous upgrades in standard features, including:
- Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
- 435-watt Acura/ELS Surround 10-speaker audio system with 15 GB hard disk drive (HDD) memory
- Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition
- 8-inch high-resolution VGA display
- Multi-view rear view camera
- Bluetooth HandsFreeLink wireless telephone interface
- Ventilated and heated front seats with perforated premium Milano leather seating surfaces
- Keyless Access System (with Smart Entry and pushbutton ignition)
- Dual-zone automatic climate control system

The ZDX, including many other models by other manufacturers, is an odd mixture of different body styles. Market researchers have indicated that hatchback and wagons were the hottest trend in automotive design, and the sales folks stated that the crossovers were the hottest sellers. When automotive planners and designers build vehicles based on numbers and statistics, thereby ignoring their instincts to stick to the basics, an odd form of a vehicle gets born.

Honda is usually pretty disciplined about building cars that make sense. Many automotive and Honda enthusiasts applaud at the fact that this grand experiment is coming to an end. Honda desperately seems to need a clear focus on building great cars again, and discontinuation of the ZDX may be a good sign that they are getting there.
