Ford launched an industrial grade people mover with over 30MPG to compete in the minivan world. The 2014 Ford Transit Connect Wagon is all-new, and is a significant departure from the first generation Transit Connect Wagon that seemed almost purely industrial.

On paper, the numbers are impressive. The 2014 Ford Transit Connect Wagon delivers better fuel economy than the Toyota Sienna. The wagon can haul a heavier payload than the Dodge Grand Caravan or Toyota Tacoma Double Cab. Yet, it has more passenger space than other microvans like the Mazda5.

The wagon offers almost a perfect combination of utility and family-friendliness. The sliding doors, overhead toy compartment and available panoramic glass vista roof shout out the minivan-ness of the wagon. The flat folding second and third row seats, 1,200-pound payload and available symmetrical side-hinged cargo doors tell a story of a cargo van.

The question of the day is, will it sell?

The new Ford Transit Connect Wagon certainly has an extremely strong appeal to folks looking for a seven passenger people mover that can also haul like a truck. In other words, the wagon may be perfect for a small business owner with a large family. But is it minivan enough to appeal widely to soccer moms and dads? Or, perhaps more important, is it a vehicle that the daughters of the family would desire to be seen in or with? ("What is it called again?")

The 2014 Ford Transit Connect Wagon will hit the showrooms in Q4 of 2013. Ford may still have some time to add more family friendly features inside the wagon. While the wagon as it stands is certainly not a family-oriented minivan, it is a huge improvement from the first generation Transit Connect Wagon.
