When people think of a supercar, the thing that comes to mind is either a Ferrari or a Lamborghini. For the last 50 years, Lamborghini has been a serious rival with Ferrari in building supercars.
During World War II, Ferruccio Lamborghini started building and selling tractors and became very successful at it. He was a huge collector of luxury sports cars, including Ferraris. When the clutch on one of his Ferraris kept breaking, he notice that it was the same used in his tractors. When he went to complain that the clutch kept braking, Enzo Ferrari replied by noting that he only built tractors and knew nothing about cars. This angered Lamborghini and he responded by forming his own car company and noted that his cars will be true sports cars.
The first car that gained huge popularity was the Miura. Not only was it incredibly fast, it was the first car to be mid-engined. This allowed for better weight distribution and made the car handle better. This also made Enzo Ferrari very nervous because he now had a serious competitor in the sports car industry. After the Miura, the majority of high performance cars fitted their engines in the middle.
Lamborghini did struggle during the years, especially after the oil crisis of the 1970's and faced bankruptcy in 1978. After being owned by many different car companies, Lamborghini was then bought by Audi in 1998. Since then, Lamborghini has brought forth a few exciting and gorgeous cars, including the Murcilago and the recent Aventador.
The one thing that is always memorable are the concept cars made by Lamboghini. The Reventon was designed to like an F22 Raptor with it's jet fighter like qualities. The concept cars are usually made to do two things: show what direction future cars wil be like and give the public a giant orgasm of amazement. The recent car made by Lamborghini, the Veneno, is the most intense looking car ever made by the supercar maker. It's also almost like a myth since only a few of the cars will be made.
I've always preferred Lamborghinis to Ferraris becuase Lamboghinis are way more insane. While Ferrari tends to focus more on performance and racing qualities, Lamborghini focuses more on showing off and being an absolute fun time. Of course, the debate will always go on, probably for the next fifty years, as to which is car company is better; Ferrari or Lamborghini. No matter what happens during the next 50 years, I'm sure Lamborghini will continue to make bonkers cars while Ferrari will focus more on serious cars.
