Test Drive: 2013 Mercedes Benz E550

For many, Mercedes cars are the best cars ever made. When you first se the Mercedes E550, it looks like a simple luxury sedan. People passing by it may think its just used to travel at a leisurely pace around town.
Inside is even more luxurious than the outside. The entire interior is loaded with hand stitched leather and polished wood trim. The LED screen used for GPS and other apps is big enough to use but not so big its blocking your view. The shifter has gone back from being on the floor to being on the steering wheel. This time instead of moving the entire shifter with your arm, you simply tap up for reverse, down for drive, and tap the end for park. Seems a bit lazy but still looks very nice. One other new thing is the roof is completely made of glass. This gives you not only a great breeze, but also the feel of being in a planetarium at night since all you will see is the night sky.
Now, all this luxury in a sedan seems nice, but what you will really notice is how it moves. The twin turbo V8 packs an incredible 402 hp. That means this sedan will go from 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds and then to a still limited top speed of 132 mph. Even though top speed is a bit low, the amount of hp plus 443 ft-lb of torque means that you will literally feel your face fall of when you put your foot down.
Once you put your face back on, it will fall right off again when you go into a corner. This car handles so well in the corners that Mercedes put in some automatic side cushions on the driver and passenger seats. Without these cushions to catch you, you would definitely go through the door. The one thing I would say about them is that theyre a little too hard. I was expecting to hit a soft pillow, not a hard piece of rock. After a while, my side started to hurt and that became a bit annoying.
Driving a Mercedes E550 isnt just a fun ride for drivers; its also great for passengers. Each seat not only heats up, but they also massage you as well. Besides the large amount of legroom, passengers can also attach their iPad to the back of either front seat. And with the built in Wi-Fi hotspot, passengers can access the internet as well.
If 402 hp is still a bit too slow for you, you can opt for the insane E63 AMG sedan. This bumps the V8 up to 518 hp, going from 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. That not only will tear your body apart, but youll be in the back seat when you stop. So the E550 may look like a regular luxury sedan, but believe me, its much more than that. Its simply incredible. Special thanks to Holloway Motor Cars of Manchester for test vehicle.
