2014 Mitsubishi Outlander
Can the new Outlander save Mitsubishi in the US?
After Suzuki's exit from the US market, pundits have been discussing Mitsubishi's fate in the most competitive automotive marketplace in the world. A lot was riding on the new Outlander, as Mitsubishi introduced the all-new Outlander at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
At a glance, the new Outlander looks good. The 7-passenger CUV is 200 pounds lighter than the previous version, and carries much more modern design flair than before.
Mitsubishi promises that the 2.4L I4 166HP engine, coupled with a CVT, will yield the best in class fuel efficiency. The more expensive Outlander GT trim is powered by the 24-valve 3.0L V6 224HP MIVEC engine, which is coupled with an advanced 6-speed automatic transmission.
To top other new vehicles introduced, the 2014 Outlander comes with advanced safety features, such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Mitigation, and Lane Departure Warning. And it has a long list of standard safety features:
- 7 airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) including side curtain airbags, driver's knee airbag, and a completely redesigned new airbag for the driver's seat
- new Brake Pedal Recession Protection Structure to reduce driver leg injury in the event of a high-speed frontal impact
- enhanced pedestrian protection with the redesigned hood and front fenders
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
- Active Stability Control (ASC) with Traction Control Logic (TCL)
- Hill Start Assist (HSA)
- anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD)
- all-new ultra-rigid chassis that benefits from the most advanced form of Mitsubishi's RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) impact-absorbing safety cell technology
Mitsubishi does have a lot to offer to the US consumers. The company always had access to interesting and advanced technologies via its corporate sisters and alliances, and Mitsubishi still reigns strong in rally racing and off-roading. The new Outlander looks good and does come with a lot of standard features. Will it win over American consumers' hearts and mind? Mitsubishi's future in the States may depend on it.
